Optimizing Cartridge Mixers for Construction Materials

1. Importance of Static Mixer Elements

The number of static mixer elements inside a cartridge significantly impacts product performance. Some materials require thorough mixing before reaching the end of the mixer. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Polyurethane Foam Products and Thin Urethanes: These typically don’t need excessive mixing—around 24 times is sufficient. Therefore, the 1/4x24 element mixer suits most of these products, not just Nextstar offerings.

2. Static Mixers for Epoxy Applications

  • Epoxies: These compounds generally require more rigorous mixing—around 32 times. However, there’s a catch:
    • EHV and Injection 101 Paste: When using a manual dispenser, passing these epoxies through a large diameter, the 32-element mixer can be challenging. Instead, consider heating the product and using a large-diameter, 24-element mixer—a practical compromise for manual tools.
    • Pneumatic Dispensing Tools: Contractors using pneumatic dispensers face no issues. These tools easily handle pressures up to 90 lbs, making the large 32-element mixers ideal for 101 or EHV epoxy.
Select your static mixer for your product depending on its chemical make-up

3. Specialty Mixers (40 - 48 Elements)

  • When Solvents, Dyes, or Pigments Are Involved: Specialty mixers come into play. These ensure thorough blending, resolving any separation or unmixed chemical components that could affect product curing.

4. Equalizing Cartridges

  • Imperfect Filling: Most dual cartridge systems are never perfectly filled—one side may have more material than the other.
  • Equalization: Before use, ensure the pistons in the cartridge have equalized. Proper mixing depends on this step.
  • Dispose of Initial Product: Disposing of the first dispensed product equalizes the pistons and guarantees a consistent mix.

5. Cross-Over Flow Restrictors

  • Purpose: These restrictors prevent one side from contaminating the other within the cartridge (for low-viscosity products).
  • Partial Cartridge Use: If you’ll use only part of a cartridge and save the rest for later, consider using a flow restrictor.
  • Medium Viscosity: Avoid using flow restrictors with thicker products.

Remember, optimized cartridge mixing ensures superior construction results.
